After Leochares, Diana the Huntress, Late 19th Century, Bronze

This large bronze reduction of Diana of Versailles presents a regal and dynamic presence, faithful to one of the most iconic antique models. The Roman goddess of the hunt, assimilated to Artemis by the Greeks, is depicted walking, grasping the antlers of a small stag with her left hand while her other hand draws an arrow from the quiver slung over her shoulder. Her short tunic, finely detailed sandals, diadem, and hairstyle with waves tied at the nape of her neck testify to precise modeling and masterful casting. The "Mechanical Reduction A. Collas" stamp on the base attests to a high-quality edition and allows the casting to be attributed to the prestigious Barbedienne firm, whose expertise greatly contributed to the dissemination of masterpieces from Antiquity in the 19th century. The model is based on the famous Roman marble copy housed in the Louvre Museum, itself inspired by a 4th-century BC Greek original generally attributed to the Athenian sculptor Leochares.
