Antique Belgian Female Portrait Oil Painting by Franz Gailliard

Frans Gailliard studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where his teachers were Jean-François Portaels, Joseph Stallaert, François Bossue and Paul Lauters. During his studies, he rubbed shoulders with James Ensor, Léon Frédéric and Fernand Khnopff. He became a friend of the American painter Whistler in 1887 and met during trips to Berlin and Paris the important artists of his time. He is also interested in esotericism and occultism.
In 1897, he made a portrait of King Chulalongkorn Siam during his official visit to Belgium. He was also a journalist for French, English and Belgian magazines, where he published news cartoons. As an engraver, he immortalized the urban landscapes of Brussels.
He became director of the Academy of Saint-Gilles. One of his students was Wilchar. The street where he lived in Saint-Gilles was later renamed rue Franz Gaillard (Franz Gaillard Straat). He is buried in the Saint-Gilles cemetery in a cubist style vault that suggests a cross and a kneeling figure with outstretched arms.
He is the father of Jean-Jacques Gailliard, born in 1890.
