This is a handsome antique writing bureau which dates to the early 20th century.
Made of mahogany and veneers it is solid and well made, ideal for an office or study. The bureau makes a nice alternative to a traditional desk and is a useful work space for any home, perfect for stowing away a laptop.
The bureau is simply styled, the top fitted with a fall front which opens to reveal a fitted interior with pigeon holes and two small drawers for stationery and correspondence. The fall front is decorated with a pretty shell inlay and is lockable, the key is present.
Below the top section are three narrow drawers, all finished with brass drop handles set on round back plates.
The bureau is set simple bracket feet.
I have hand painted this piece in my own mix of black chalk based paint before distressing the paintwork for a gently aged look. The paintwork has been waxed for protection and has a low sheen smooth finish.
height to top-97cms
height to fall front-71cms
The bureau is in solid structural condition with various marks of age and use.
The hinges to the fall front look like newer replacements, the wood surrounding them is a little chipped here and there. There are a couple of areas to the edge of the fall front that have been knocked and worn away over the years.
One of the drop handles is a newer replacement and one drawer has a few old wood worm holes to the drawer base.
