Antique Dark Elm Altar Cabinet

This lovely long sideboard is originally from Beijing, made from elm with a lacquered rattan panel set into the top. The doors open out to one large space and there is a central post between the two centre doors that is removable. The hardware on the doors and on the three drawers above is new - replacements for the original. The cabinet is in a style used as an altar surface for displaying ancestor offerings, with a long, extended top overhanging the side frames with everted flanges at each end. The cabinet sides taper in slightly towards the top and between the feet there is a plain, curved apron. The dark lacquer finish is largely intact but worn in places, particularly around the upper frames. At over two metres in length, this is an imposing cabinet in a classic Chinese style that would work wonderfully in a reception room or as a dining room sideboard.
