About This Piece

Vintage Design

A fine Jacobean coffer, dating to circa 1650, crafted in solid English oak. The chest features a two-plank hinged top opening to an interior fitted with one candle box (the second now lost). The front is carved with twin domed arches, centred by the initials H and G.
This coffer displays the rich colour and deep patina for which early English oak is prized, with hand-tooled surfaces and centuries of natural wear. It is not a pristine example, but a highly collectible survivor, embodying the rustic character and authenticity of 17th-century English joinery.
English oak coffers such as this formed an essential part of domestic life in the Jacobean period, used for storage of linen, valuables, and household goods. Today, they are valued for their heritage and presence, bridging the worlds of functional furniture and cultural history.
This piece would suit farmhouse, medieval revival, or rustic interiors, and equally serves as a rare, atmospheric statement piece in a contemporary home.
