The Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies (full name: Antoni Tàpies IN Puig) was born in Barcelona on December 23, 1923. His love for art and literature is evident from an early age. During the long convalescence of a lung disease, Tàpies begins to paint and draw. In 1944, Tapiès began to study law, which he abandoned in 1946 to finally turn to art. Antoni Tàpies' early paintings were still inspired by the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee and Joan Miró. After a surrealist and dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947 he created the painting ''Zoom'', a programmatic work for his later work. In 1948 Antoni Tàpies and others founded the artist group ''Dau als Set'', whose most important representative he became.
In 1950 Antoni Tàpies received a grant from the French government that enabled him to stay in Paris. Also in 1950, his first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona. In 1951 Tàpies traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953 he is in New York for a short time, where an exhibition of his works is held. In 1958 he participates in the Venice Biennale, gaining international recognition. He is represented at the documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977.
Antoni Tàpies is considered the most important representative of Spanish Informel. He mixes sand, cement, marble dust, glue into his paintings. He scrapes off paint and reapplies it until the surface looks like chapped brickwork. Throughout his life, Tàpies has intensively studied Far Eastern philosophies. In search of expression, he integrates individual letters, signs, crosses, even objects or pieces of clothing. Antoni Tàpies' material and mural paintings have a mysterious, meditative effect. He does not describe himself as an abstract artist, but as a realist who tries to make reality comprehensible in his works.
In 1984 Antoni Tàpies founded the ''Fundació Antoni Tàpies'' in Barcelona.
