About This Piece

Vintage Design

Designed by Halabala for UP Zavody, a well-known furniture manufacturer and dealer based in Brno, Czechoslovakia.

In the last few years, these chairs have become increasingly rare with an equally increasing demand from interior designers.

The armchair has been restored and reupholstered by our professional refurbishing team in Czechia according to the original process. The new upholstery is high quality leather, it's very easy to clean and retains its colours very well even in direct sunlight.

indrich Halabala (1903-1978) was a renowned designer credited with ushering in the mass market production of furniture in his native Czechoslovakia.

His most iconic armchair designs: The H series; were designed in between the World Wars. His use of tubular steel, in some of his designs, went on to inspire countless interior designers and architects throughout the 20th century and beyond.

His designs can now be found in collections of institutions like the Museum of Art in Olomouc and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today, Czechia issues an annual award in his name for excellence in furniture and interior design.

More about Art Deco:

Art Deco is a style that originated from France in the early 20th century. Its furniture designs are meticulously crafted, usually using exotic woods. Pieces are normally lacquered to give off a dazzling gloss. These eloquently crafted pieces will add visual performance and posh to any interior.

About the Creator

Jindřich Halabala

Czech industrial designer, writer, and educator Jindřich Halabala was a significant proponent of modernist, industrially manufactured furniture in Czechoslovakia and had a tremendous influence on the interior design of many interwar and postwar Czech homes.

Born in 1903 in Koryčany, Halabala spent his formative years training as a cabinetmaker in his father’s joinery workshop before entering the state-owned woodworking school in Valašské Meziříčí in 1920. He completed his practical studies with woodworking company Associated Arts & Crafts Enterprises, known as UP (Spojené Uměleckoprůmyslové Závody), in Brno. Halabala subsequently studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague under Czech modernist architect-designer Pavel Janák (1881-1956). After graduating in 1926, Halabala worked briefly at the studio of Bohumil Hübschmann in Prague, until he was hired by UP. Halabala quickly became the firm’s development manager, responsible for product promotion and sales strategy—a position he maintained until 1946. Believing that furniture should be fully functional, modular, mobile, and widely affordable, Halabala advocated for a new mass-market approach to furnishing, ultimately pioneering industrial furniture manufacturing in Czechoslovakia.

Halabala’s designs include chairs, tables, sideboards, drawers, flower stands, couches, lamps, and more, with an aesthetic that drew from Czech Cubism, Art Déco, and classic European mid-century modernism. During the 1930s, he developed the modular series H and E, as well as various types of wooden and tubular steel pieces inspired by Bauhaus designers Mart Stam (1899-1986) and Marcel Breuer (1902-1981). These cantilevered designs, which were produced in UP's Hodonín branch, are highly sought-after today on the vintage market.

Other Halabala designs include the H-269 Lounge Chair (early 1930s)—arguably the most well-known Czech design, instantly recognizable for its exaggerated, curved armrests; the spider-like H-370 Coffee Table (1930s); and the adjustable H-70 Lounge Chair (1930s), to name a few. Like his Scandinavian contemporaries Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) and Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988), Halabala utilized bentwood in most of his chair designs.

Between 1951 and 1954, Halabala was an external lecturer at the Faculty of Forestry & Timber Engineering at VSPD in Kosice, and in 1954, he was appointed professor at the University of Forestry & Wood in Zvolen. He was also a prolific writer, routinely publishing articles in journals as well as the general press. Notably, Halabala was the chairman of the Association of Furniture Manufacturers of Czechoslovakia.

Halabala retired in 1970 and passed away in 1978 in Brno. His designs can be found in the collections of the Moravská Gallery in Brno and the Museum of Modern Art in Olomouc.

About the Maker

UP Závody

UP Závody—an acronym for Czech furniture manufacturer Spojené uměleckoprůmyslové závody (or, Associated Arts & Crafts Enterprises, in English)—was founded in Brno in 1920, following a merger of enterprises started by Jan Vaněk and Karel Slavíček. Initially comprising woodworkers who chiefly produced cabinetry, the company broadened its offering in the late 1920s to include an entire range of home furnishings, following the directive of the firm’s fresh-faced and precocious development director, Jindřich Halabala, who led the company’s product promotion and sales strategy until 1946.

Believing that furniture should be fully functional, modular, mobile, and widely affordable, Halabala—who also designed for Thonet—advocated for a new mass-market approach to Czech furnishing. To that end, he designed and produced an UP Závody catalogue that included chairs , tables , sideboards , dressers , couches , lamps , and more, all influenced by the aesthetics of Czech Cubism, Art Déco, and European modernism. During the 1930s, he developed the H and E modular series, as well as various types of wooden and tubular steel pieces inspired by Bauhaus designers Mart Stam (1899-1986) and Marcel Breuer (1902-1981). These cantilevered designs, which were fabricated in UP's Hodonín branch, are highly sought-after today on the vintage market.

On the heels of Halabala’s success, by 1937, UP had grown into Europe’s largest furniture manufacturer—with a reputation synonymous with good taste and quality. The company’s clout continued to widen internationally, even with the onset of the Second World War. After the war, however, UP was nationalized, which forced the company to focus more on quantity than quality. Although UP remained active throughout the latter half of the 20th century, this dilution of its foundational commitment to serial designs of the highest grade ensured the company’s fade from design relevance—a wither exemplified by the lack of late-century UP work on the vintage market.

In 1992, UP merged with fellow Czech furniture manufacturer Tusculum Rousínov to become Tusculum a.s., which, in the early oughts, became absorbed by Jitona, currently one of the five largest suppliers of veneered furniture for Ikea Europe.
