Jaeger Lecoultre "Atmos" clock. The Atmos clock is a clock (technically, a torsion clock) produced by Jaeger-Lecoultre. This clock, the first model of which was invented by Jean-Léon Reutter in 1928, has the particularity of not needing manual winding. The energy required for its operation comes originally from the change in temperature and atmospheric pressure, hence its name. It is also known as the "perpetual motion clock" or the "clock that lives on the air". The power source for the Atmos clock is a hermetically sealed Vidie capsule containing a gas, ethyl chloride. This gas expands in a membrane as the temperature rises, compressing the coil spring. When the temperature drops, the gas condenses and the spring relaxes. It is this mechanism that perpetually powers the pendulum. Thus, an Atmos can run for years without any human intervention. A simple variation of one degree (for a temperature between 15° and 30°) or a pressure variation of 3 mmHg is enough to power the clock for two days.
