Ancient baroque chest of drawers from the 18th century.

Central Germany.
Made from walnut.
Baroque around 1760.

Stand -like three -way furniture on squeezing feet.
Multiple curved and kinked furniture front with a solid base and panel edge.

The drawers are veneered in walnut with three ash framed fields made of walnut masher. We also see fields in the same manner on the sides and the cover plate.

Clean and contemporary manual quality.

The chest of drawers, which is mostly equipped with one -way drawers, largely replaced the chest in the bourgeois household at the beginning of the 18th century.
In order to better understand the development of the chest of drawers, the examination of the drawer and its importance on previous furniture is required.
An early use for the drawer can be found on the Renaissance double cabinet. The understanding of using drawers as a storage room is limited to the storage of precious, small devices or objects, which are particularly important and are deposited separately by the usual objects used in the household.
It is still a long way for the drawer to use as a warehouse. Initially hidden behind doors, the drawer only occurs as an independent, constructive element in cabinet cabinets of the late 17th century, the front of which also takes on design functions. It still only serves to store objects that are of high value or special importance.
Only with the separate storage of laundry and clothing does the drawer take on more profane tasks. This ultimately leads to the development of the chest of drawers as an independent furniture, which in the 18th century is also increasingly important for space art and more and more the design focus of the craftsmen applies.
The chest of drawers finds rapid and comprehensive distribution and changes into a decorative-technical challenge for carpenters, wood sculptor and metal craftsmen.
