Patinated bronze sculpture after Philippe Magnier (1648-1715) made by the Barbedienne foundry using the Collas mechanical reproduction process. This sculpture represents two nude men on the ground wrestling. They rest on a oval base. The bronze is stamped with the Collas reproduction seal. This representation is a copy after an Antique made by Philippe Magnier, between 1684 and 1688, from a work in the Uffizi Palace. The original was intended for the park of the Château de Versailles before being moved to the park of the Château de Marly. The revival of this theme in bronze corresponds to the taste under Louis-Philippe for the classical themes. It is a work of the 19th century. The Barbedienne foundry is a close collaboration starting in 1838 between Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas. They made bronzes after Antique sculptures thanks to the technique of mechanical reproduction invented by Collas. It was for them an opportunity to democratize Art by making it more accessible to the bourgeoisie of the time.
