The starting point for this project was a very specific production process: cast iron. It is one of the oldest methods of working ferrous metals. The production process has an almost archaic physicality and materiality. Iron foundries are part of heavy industry.
Although cast iron is mainly used for decorative purposes, such as in Victorian garden furniture, it is a material with two distinctive characteristics: it is heavy and sturdy. Cast iron performs well under compression, which is why it is used as a structural material in bridge construction and, on a scale closer to that of furniture, as a base for heavy machinery.
It is precisely this use of cast iron that inspired BRUT, a collection of tables and benches. The design recalls the industrial use of cast iron and applies the grammar of this material to the realm of contemporary furniture: a solid and uncompromising material. The name Brut means raw and untreated, but at the same time it also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine. It is therefore a name that expresses refinement and sophistication, which are also characteristics of our project.
The name evokes something raw, unfinished. A massive piece of heavy, inflexible iron. However, BRUT also brings to mind the sweetness of sparkling wine, which speaks to us of refinement and elegance, qualities that are also intrinsic to our project.
The BRUT collection consists of a large rectangular table, a height-adjustable trestle table, two round tables, a bistro table, and two types of benches.

About the Creator

Konstantin Grcic

Born in Munich in 1965, Konstantin Grcic was trained as a cabinetmaker at The John Makepeace School in Dorset, England, before studying design at the Royal College of Art in London. After graduating in 1990, he worked for a year in Jasper Morrison’s studio and then returned to Munich to open his own practice.

Since 1991, Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) has developed numerous highly acclaimed furniture and lighting products for some of the world’s leading design brands, including Vitra, Magis, Plank, Established & Sons, Muji, Flos, Classicon, and Moroso. Grcic also periodically produces limited editions and special projects, especially in collaboration with Galerie Kreo in Paris.

Grcic defines function in human terms, combining formal strictness with mental acuity and humor. Known for pared-down aesthetics, Grcic is often called a minimalist but the designer himself prefers to speak of simplicity.
