About This Piece

Vintage Design

An extremely rare and complete Mid century dining set incorporating a 3 metre extending rosewood model 201 dining table and 12 solid rosewood and black leather model 430 dining chairs by Arne Vodder for Sibast furniture.

I literally don't have enough superlatives to describe this set; from the beautifully matched rosewood veneer of the tabletop to the simple curved form of Vodder’s solid rosewood 430 chairs this set exudes class, elegance and refinement. It’s believed the 430 chairs were designed specifically for the model 201 table and that belief is echoed in how the proportion of the chairs exactly match the table to allow 5 to fit along each side of the extended table with one each at either end that fit within the alcove created by the tripod supporting legs. This also follows through with the proportional balance of each extension leaf so that with one removed it still allows 10 place settings and even in its smallest unextended state will still seat 8. If you research the table and chairs you will find that it is very rare indeed to find the table as here with its full complement of 12 matching chairs.

The 430 chairs are in their original condition and have clearly been very well looked after over the years. As far as I can tell they feature the original soft black leather upholstery and whilst they do have some small marks to the seat, just as you would expect, they remain in very good vintage condition. They are constructed from solid rosewood and as such each chair is unique in its own right and features slightly different patterns of graining and colour. This ranges from straighter to more curved grain figuring to differences in colour from darker brown to more red, orange and golden tones; which is of course the nature of all vintage rosewood furniture.

The table and both extending leaves have clearly at some point in their life been meticulously restored and French polished. This is evidenced by the fact the surface is in very fine condition and the colour of the leaves exactly match the colour of the main table top where so often the main top is faded with use and UV exposure over the years. The table is therefore also in excellent vintage condition with a few small marks and knocks to the top and legs again just as you would expect. It has beautiful grain figuring that not only matches along the top of the main table but is also perfectly matched in each extension leaf. In addition, the leaves can be stored inside the table when not in use as the there are two shelves under the main top set within the supporting structure. The table is marked under the main top with the model 201 number, the Sibast label and the date of production of 1959 (as shown in the photos) making it one of the earliest production models produced by Sibast.

This dining set is perfect for a large dining room or for a sophisticated office or conference room setting and is highly adaptable by the use of the extension leaves enabling it to be adjusted to your space. It’s stylish and practical and offers both poise and perfect balance in a way that shows what a master craftsman Vodder was.

Arne Vodder
Arne Vodder originally trained as both an architect and cabinetmaker and completed his studies under Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He started his own architecture and design studio alongside architect Anton Borg in 1950 producing beautifully designed high end furniture for a number of key Danish Mid-century manufacturers. Most notably he worked with Sibast, a Danish cabinetmaking firm started in 1908 by Peder Olsen Sibast, and is best known for his sculptural chairs and striking sideboards produced in both teak and rosewood.
Vodder represented the 2nd generation of great Danish furniture designers and was particularly active during the 60’s and 70’s. His pieces are instantly recognisable to anyone with an eye for Mid-century Modern design: often simple in form his work projects both strength and elegance as well as an occasional foray into asymmetry and playfulness.

About the Creator

Arne Vodder

Arne Vodder was born in Denmark in 1926. Trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, he studied under Finn Juhl at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating in 1947. After school, he worked as a designer at Hindsgaul in Copenhagen, focusing primarily on office décor. In 1950, Vodder launched his own architecture and design studio with architect Anton Borg. Over the years, the studio moved to a few locations within Copenhagen before ultimately settling in the suburb of Holte, north of the city. Together, the two designed furniture as well as several low-cost houses. Vodder and Borg collaborated until the 1970s.

Vodder is best known for his furniture designs, which tended to be simple pieces composed of natural materials such as rosewood and teak, often inspired by the natural forms, and occasionally accented with colorful panels. Vodder worked with several respected brands throughout his career, designing cabinetry, tables, seating, and more for furniture makers Fritz Hanson, France & Søn, Nielaus, Sibast, Kircodan (for which he designed garden furniture), as well as the department store Havemanns Magasin A/S (for which he designed the interiors), among others.

While Vodder is less well known today than some of his contemporaries, his work was well received throughout his lifetime. In fact, between the 1950s and ’70s, Vodder’s furniture designs were used by President Jimmy Carter in the White House and President Anwar Sadat in Cairo, and were also included in the United Nations Office in Geneva, as well as in a number of hotels, banks, and embassies worldwide. His work was exhibited widely both individually and in group exhibitions with the likes of Verner Panton and Nanna Ditzel.

Vodder passed away in 2009.

About the Maker

Sibast

Danish furniture manufacturer Sibast began in 1908 when cabinetmaker Peder Olsen Sibast opened a woodworking atelier on Denmark’s island of Funen.  The family-owned company steadily expanded throughout the first half of the 20th century. In 1943, Sibast’s children, Emma, Ole, and Helge, took the reins, and together they carried Sibast to international acclaim. According to Anna Sibast, great-granddaughter-in-law of the company’s founder, “Emma was in administration, taking care of the finances and the employees’ wellbeing. Ole played a big role in selling, for example, to Hilton Hotels and the White House, to name a few. And Helge was the driving force in the design and production side of the business.” In the postwar era, Sibast became one of Denmark’s largest producers of fine wood chairs, tables, and sideboards, celebrated for high quality craftsmanship and modernist silhouettes.

Helge Sibast apprenticed under his father and was responsible for a many of the company’s most successful designs, including No. 7 Chair and No. 8 Chair (both 1953). He also commissioned a number of top Danish designers of the day, like Grete Jalk, to develop Sibast lines. Arne Vodder, in particular, collaborated with Sibast frequently between the 1950s and ‘70s. Notably, in 1957, Vodder was awarded first prize at the X Triennale di Milano for his No. 29A Sideboard for Sibast.

The taste for Danish modern furniture waned by the 1980s, and Sibast declined. In 1984, the Sibast family sold the business—a year before Helge passed away—but wisely retained the copyright to many of its most popular designs.  In 2012, the fourth Sibast generation, Ditlev and his wife Anna, revived the company, which today produces a few of the most iconic Sibast designs from the midcentury, along with a few new ones that carry on the same spirit.
