A gorgeous, outstanding and extremely rare set of four Mid Century Danish teak and rattan dining chairs in wonderful condition. Designed by Niels Koefoed and produced in Hornslet, Denmark, in the 1960s, this fabulous set will add beautiful colouring, exemplary quality and a fantastic, timeless Scandinavian aesthetic to any interior.

Koefoed specialised in creating stunning dining room furniture and these 'Lis' dining chairs are thought to have been named after one of the important women in his life. Sculpted from beautiful two-tone teak wood ranging from golden honey to rich nutty brown, these are unmistakably Danish with their exacting design, fabulously elegant lines, minimalist form, outstanding quality and use of natural materials.

Koefoed's Lis chairs are very rare and even more so are his carver armchairs with their standout sleek, stylish and ergonomic arms, of which this set has two. And it's almost unheard of to find a set on the market with cane rattan backs and seats such as this, making these an extremely rare and special set indeed.

All in all this is a jaw-droppingly beautiful and extremely rare set of dining chairs by one of the masters of Mid Century Danish design.

CONDITION
These are in very-good-to-excellent condition, especially for their age. Structurally sound, they have been cleaned and oiled and show only to-be-expected very minor marks to signify their age and the seats are all firm with no issues. Overall they're a fabulous and unbelievably rare set of Danish Mid-Century dining chairs in wonderful condition and if well looked after they should remain so for another 60+ years if not more - please see the photos.

About the Creator

Niels Koefoed

Danish furniture designer and factory owner Niels Koefoed created a wide range of dining room furniture in the typical Danish modern style during the mid-century period.

Named after the town it was located in, the furniture factory Koefoeds Hornslet was founded by Koefoed’s father Einar Koefoed in the 1920s. The town of Hornslet boasted three furniture producers in the late 20th-century, each specializing in different areas of the design industry: fine furniture, upholstery, and cabinetry. Koefoeds Hornslet was dedicated to producing fine furniture, although Niels’ most popular designs were dining room chairs .

In 1964, Koefoed designed the modernist Eva Chair, which featured three vertical slats on the back rest, and was produced by Koefoeds in a choice of teak or rosewood. Eventually, rosewood was phased out, replaced by cherry. The Eva Chair was part of a series of three dining chairs, the other two being the highly-organically shaped Ingrid Chair (1960s) and the ladderback Lis Chair (1961), all of which are believed to have been named after important women in Koefoed’s life, Ingrid being Koefoed’s daughter. The Peter Chair (1957) is thought to have been named after his son.

In 2004, Koefoed Hornslet moved production to Thailand, where it continues today. Although a number of Koefoed’s mid-century designs are produced by furniture manufacturer Casø, it is the original mid-century era productions that are in great demand on the vintage market.
