About This Piece

Vintage Design

Trinidad teak dining chairs by Nanna Ditzel for Fredericia Stolefabrik Denmark 1990s

When designing the Trinidad Chair Model 3298 in 1993, Danish designer Nanna Ditzel found inspiration in the elaborate fretwork from the Gingerbread Facades that she had seen in the colonial architecture while travelling through Trinidad. Much like the facades, the cut-out fretwork of the chair triggers an interplay of light and shadows, creating a pattern projected into space and a subtle sense of motion.

With the Trinidad Chair, instead of eliminating any ornamentation, which was part of the Modernist mantra, Ditzel did the opposite. She kept the ornamentation as the focal point in a distinctive chair that challenged the prevailing design dogma at the time.

The cut-outs featured in the curved shell not only function as a decorative element, they also dramatically lighten the visual density of the chair.

What’s more, the lightweight design allows for hours of seating comfort, able to suit any setting as well the person who sits in it. The fretwork ensures that the body is always ventilated and the chair is always kept at room temperature. At the same time, it provides excellent acoustics where sound resonance should be reduced.

Given its graphic fretwork and almost transparent presence, the Trinidad Chair was an immediate success when it was first introduced and was a key driver during the renewal of Danish design in the 90’s.

This a very rare version of the Trinidad chair with seat and back in teak and frame in galvanized steel with serial no: 1007.

The chairs are stackable.

Very good condition. Only few small nicks and scratches. Beautiful patina and teak color.

About the Creator

Nanna Ditzel

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1923, modern designer Nanna Ditzel (nee Hauberg) initially trained as a cabinetmaker at the Richards School before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. She graduated with a degree in furniture design in 1946. She met her first husband, Jørgen Ditzel during her studies, in 1943, and they began working and exhibiting together in 1944. In 1946, the pair established a design studio in Copenhagen focused primarily on interiors and multipurpose, adjustable, and children’s furniture. Their iconic 1959 Hanging Chair, nicknamed the “Egg Chair,” is arguably their most famous piece; the rounded wicker seat hangs from chains from the ceiling.

Since Jørgen passed away in 1961, Nanna Ditzel continued to work in a range of design arenas—from jewelry and textiles to furniture, tableware, and applied arts—and using a variety of materials, including fiberglass, rubber, and wicker. In 1968, she married Kurt Heide and relocated to London, where they created a showroom and meeting place for international design in Hampstead, which was called Interspace. Her own studio and company, Nanna Ditzel Productions Ltd., also made its home in London. In 1986, after the death of her second husband, Ditzel returned to Denmark.

Ditzel was nicknamed the “First Lady of Danish Furniture Design” by the Scandinavian Furniture Fair, and her work has been exhibited around the globe. Her awards include a lifelong artist’s grant from the Danish Ministry of Culture in 1998 and she was elected Honorable Royal Designer by the Royal Society of Arts in London in 1996.  Her clients included Georg Jensen, Kvadrat, Kvist, Fredericia Furniture, among others.

Ditzel continued to work until shortly before her death in 2005 in Copenhagen.

About the Maker

Fredericia

Danish furniture maker Fredericia Stolefabrik was founded in 1911 by N. P. Ravnsø in an industrial port town of the same name—where, the year prior, the era's largest Scandinavian design fair, the Nordic International Furniture Exhibition, was held. The company and the town continued to host the fair until 1983.

From the start, Ravnsø built Fredericia's reputation on quality and hired only the most skilled craftsmen he could find. The company's early collections in the 1920s reflected the influence of pared-back, English and Central European designs. In 1934, Thonet made an exclusive licensing agreement with Fredericia for the Scandinavian region. To meet the high demand, Fredericia doubled its production staff. However, with the Nazi occupation of Denmark during the Second World War, raw materials were scarce and Fredericia struggled to survive. In the aftermath of the war, Fredericia was faced with bankruptcy.

In 1955, the Ravnsø family sold Fredericia to Andreas Graversen, an interior architect involved with Denmark's national design co-op, the FDB, to aid in postwar economic recovery. His first order of business would be to bring in the FDB's studio manager, Børge Mogensen as head of design.

During his years with the FDB, Mogensen had worked with Hans Wegner to develop modern, functionalist, affordable furniture collections. Graversen wanted Mogensen's "unpretentious, pure, and honest" design ethos to define Fredericia's future. The No. 1 Sofa (1955) was Mogensen's first design for Fredericia. The following year, Fredericia produced a collection of Shaker-inspired dining furniture by Mogensen, alongside a number of designs originally developed during Mogensen's years at the FDB, such as his famous Spindle-Back Sofa (1945) and Hunting Chair (1950). In 1958, Fredericia introduced Mogensen's iconic Spanish Chair.

Mogensen stayed with Fredericia until his untimely death in 1972. In 1980, Fredericia acquired the license for a number of Mogensen's designs for P. Lauritzen & Son, in order to consolidate Mogensen's oeuvre under one brand.

Over the years following Mogensen's passing, Frederica has continued to cultivate fruitful partnerships with prestigious Danish designers. In 1989, Federica acquired production rights for a range of Wegner furniture previously manufactured by the Johannes Hansen. In the 1990s, Fredericia began working with Nanna Ditzel, a. k. a “the Queen of Danish Design,” known for her innovative designs in foam, plastic, and rattan. Her Bench for Two for Fredericia (1989) won several awards in Denmark and Japan—a feat she repeated with Fredericia's Trinidad Chair for Fredericia in 1993.

In 2014, in tribute to Børge Mogensen's lasting legacy, Fredericia reissued a number of designs by Mogensen on the centenary of his debut at the company.

With a deep respect for tradition, Fredericia Stolefabrik has remained family-owned and changed hands only once throughout hundred-year history. The company has continuously prided itself on excellent Danish craftsmanship.
