Delft Blue Ceramic Table Lamps from Boch Frères, 1960s, Set of 2

Dutch Delft blue and white ceramic table lamps, a pair of baluster vases made by Boch for Royal Sphinx in the Netherlands, circa 1969 to 1979, and converted into one-of-a-kind chinoiserie lamps by Amitābha Studio. The deep cobalt blue and white earthenware is finished with new Ikat-style pleated shades in a tonal, blue-on-blue register.

Each lamp has been newly wired for U.S. use, taking a single E14 LED bulb (international plug customization available at no charge). Height includes the lampshades.

Royal Sphinx of Maastricht grew out of the Petrus Regout works founded in 1834 and produced its celebrated blue-and-white Delftware through 1969, after which the Belgian house Boch Frères Keramis — established at La Louvière in 1841 — acquired the designs and moulds and continued the line on Royal Sphinx's behalf from 1969 until 1979. Each base is marked underneath with the printed Royal Sphinx roundel reading "Made for Royal Sphinx by Boch, Holland, Delfts," dating and authenticating the pair.

The decoration is transfer-printed rather than hand-painted: a design engraved on a plate, lifted to paper, then pressed onto the ceramic by hand before glazing. The technique carries fine, repeating detail across the whole surface at a density brushwork could not match, which accounts for the saturated, all-over chinoiserie pattern the line is known for.

Because the transfer was applied by hand, one carries a denser, darker blue and the other a lighter tone. Brass fittings and fabric matched cords complete each lamp.
