Dean Brown

Dean Brown was born in Scotland in 1985. He studied product design at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at Scotland’s University of Dundee, graduating with a first-class honors degree in 2007. Brown established his own studio in Dundee that same year. From 2007 to 2009, he served as designer in residence at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. He went on to do a two-year design residency at Fabrica in Treviso, Italy, then working for two additional years at the institute as a senior consultant (2012–14). Brown moved to London in 2014, where he lives and works.

Brown designs narrative-driven products and installations. Notable works to date include The 7 Lamps of Making (2014), an ongoing, open-source lighting project created in coordination with Fabrica, which was inspired by John Ruskin’s essays on the Arts and Crafts movement from the 19^th century; and also Shrines (2013), a micro-furniture series co-designed with Callum Brown that invites users to venerate objects of personal significance—a book, a flower, a bottle of scotch—in everyday rituals.

Brown’s work has been exhibited in a variety of international exhibitions, including the Milan Furniture Fair (2010–14); Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2011 and 2014); Design Museum, Helsinki (2012); and the London Design Festival (2013).
