Gu Yeli

Shanghai, China

Shanghai native Gu Yeli was born in 1978, and earned her bachelor degree in Graphic Design from Donghua University.  Her work runs the gamut from film, television and commercial costume design and styling to multimedia artistic experiments. Her commercial client list includes Nike, Coke, Nokia, W+K, and Ogilvy & Mather.

Notably, Yeli’s designs often incorporate elements of her fascination with her hometown. Inspired by everyday objects, for example, she has used colorful fabric and wool to transform and up-cycle discarded, broken furniture pieces found in Shanghai’s nongtang (or alleys) into conceptual furniture pieces.

Recent exhibitions include a public installation on Lane 96 Shaoxing Lu, Shanghai (2011), as well as group exhibitions at White Space Beijing (2011) and DDM Warehouse, Shanghai (2009).
