Born in Belgium in 1983, Maarten de Ceulaer began his design education at the Sint-Lukas Hogeschool in Brussels. He went on to study at the Design Academy Eindhoven. His furniture design graduation project , A Pile of Suitcases, was inspired by his love of travel and was extremely well received. Milanese gallery Nilufar quickly picked it up and asked de Ceulaer to create an entire collection around the concept.
The designer’s work is characterized by strong conceptual and narrative elements as well as material, production, and craft experimentation. Beyond the Suitcase series, other notable projects include de Ceulaer’s Mutation series and Transformation; a collection commissioned by Fendi. He has exhibited at numerous galleries, museums, and events, including Galerie BSL (Paris), Moss (New York), Design Days Dubai, and the Stedelijk Museum ’s Hertogenbosch (Netherlands). He lives and works in Belgium.
