Mischer’Traxler

Vienna, Austria

Designers Katharina Mischer (born 1982, in Sankt Pölten, Austria) and Thomas Traxler (born 1981, in Linz, Austria) formally established Studio Mischer’Traxler in Vienna in 2009. Balancing handicraft and technology, the studio develops and designs products, furniture, interactive installations, and more, with a focus on experiments and conceptual thinking, often working with unexpected materials.

The partners each earned Bachelor’s degrees in product design from London’s Kingston University (2006). They also both graduated from the IM-Masters department at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008.

The studio’s work has been included in several contemporary design exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Design Museum London, and the Triennale di Milano, as well as a variety of international festivals. Projects by Mischer'Traxler are in the permanent collections of the Art Institute Chicago and the MAK Vienna.

The studio has won several awards, including the Wu Guanzhong Art & Science Innovation Award (2012), the Austrian Prize for Experimental Design (2009), an honorary mention from Prix Ars Electronica (2009), and the DMY Award (2009). In 2011, Mischer'Traxler was honored with the Designers of the Future Award by Design Miami/ Basel and W-Hotels. In 2012, Icon Magazine nominated them as best Emerging Designer of the Year. In addition to their own work, Mischer’Traxler collaborates with other designers and artists and lectures and leads workshops in various creative institutes.
