PaulinePlusLuis is a Brussels-based design studio founded in 2015 by French designers Pauline Capdo (born in Bayonne in 1992) and Luis Bellenger (born in Paris in 1987). The studio specializes in lighting and home décor design. Describing their approach, the duo tells us, “We work intuitively and we focus on daily events—a gesture, a story, an anecdote—to start our projects.”

PaulinePlusLuis’s designs often focus on the versatility of light. With Memory on Paper (2014), for example, fractal patterns of light are projected using nothing more than a plain white paper disk and glass tumblers. The Cravache ceiling light series (2015), meanwhile, is a modern interpretation of the classic chandelier. Screen (2015) addresses the realities of working from home by seamlessly dividing domestic and professional spaces; depending on its position, the light reflecting off the fabric makes the screen either translucent or opaque. During Fair Faire—a DIY workshop organized by ONBETAALBAAR in Brussels wherein artists tackle the challenges of transforming unwanted items into new objects with their own stories—PaulinePlusLuis created the ceiling lamp Bee (2015) from found objects, including a broom handle, a projection screen, and the inner mechanisms of a wrist builder.

The pair first met in 2011 while studying at Institut Saint-Luc in Tournai, Belgium. Prior to their meeting, Capdo studied industrial design in Toulouse at Rive Gauche high school (2009-2011); she went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in design from Institut Saint-Luc in 2014. For his part, Bellenger studied woodworking and cabinetmaking for six years at Lemonnier high school in Caen in France’s Lower Normandy region, graduating with a “Brevet des Métiers d'art” in cabinetmaking. He went on to study product design at Institut Saint-Luc, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in design in 2012. Subsequently, the duo moved to Brussels where they both obtained Masters’ degrees in industrial design at École nationale supérieure des Arts visuels de la Cambre (ENSAV La Cambre)—Bellenger graduating in 2015 and Capdo in 2016. In 2015, Capdo and Bellenger won first place in the furniture design category in the MAD Surprize! Young Belgian Design Awards. After the win, the two decided to join forces permanently and founded their design studio that same year.

To date, PaulinePlusLuis’s work has been included in a number of exhibitions, including L’objet d’un dialogue (2013) at the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne; Tremplin (2014) at the WCC-BF Gallery in Mons, Belguim; Double Jeu (2014) at Design September Brussels; The New Belgians (2016) with Wallonie-Bruxelles Design-Mode at Salone Satellite during Milan Design Week; Vitrine pour un designer (2016) at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille, France; and The New Belgians (2016) at Design September in Brussels.
