Satyendra Pakhalé

Architect-designer Satyendra Pakhalé was born in India in 1967. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur in 1989, and went on to study at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, earning his Master’s degree in 1991. Next, Pakhalé studied Advanced Product Design at the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland, graduating in 1994.

Pakhalé worked as a senior product designer for Philips Design in Eindhoven between 1995 and 1998, collaborating on projects such as communication products for Lucent Technologies and the Pangéa concept car for Renault as part of the company’s new business creation team. In 1998, he founded Satyendra Pakhalé Associates in Amsterdam. Between 2006 and 2010, Pakhalé served as head of department for the Humanity and Sustainable Living Program at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Satyendra Pakhalé Associates focuses on industrial design, transportation, and architecture; projects range from furniture, product, and interior design to appliances, computers, and digital products. Clients include the likes of Alcantara, Alessi, Magis, Moroso, Tod’s, Material ConneXion, Cappellini, Hästens, Franke, Poltrona Frau, and Novartis.

Pakhalé has earned numerous honors, such as the Editor’s Choice Award for Akasma at ICFF in New York in 2003; the Red Dot Award for add-On Radiator in 2008; and, in 2013, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Bombay. He has also lectured throughout the world on platforms such as CeBIT Germany, Casa Brasil, and Future Design Days Sweden. 

Pakhalé’s exploration of materials and technology and its plural cultural expressions has lead to limited-edition pieces for ammann//gallery in Cologne. His work is included in permanent collections at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; and the Museum for Applied Arts Cologne, among others.
