Edouard Arthur, Freshwater Fish on a White Plate, Oil on Canvas

Dimensions without frame: 33,5 x 46 x 2 cm.
Signed and dated "Arthur 48" in the lower left corner.

A striking and modernist still life depicting three freshly caught fish arranged on a white ceramic platter beside a simple kitchen knife. Executed with confident, textured brushwork and a restrained palette, the composition transforms an everyday subject into a powerful study of form, color, and materiality.
The artist emphasizes the tactile qualities of the fish through thick impasto and nuanced earthy tones, contrasting beautifully against the luminous white tablecloth and the deep, almost abstract dark background. The dynamic placement of the fish creates a subtle rhythm across the composition, while the pared-down setting recalls the directness and honesty of early 20th-century European still life painting.
Influenced by Post-Impressionist and modern realist traditions, the work balances painterly spontaneity with careful observation. The expressive handling of paint and simplified composition evoke the spirit of French and Continental modernist still lifes of the early to mid-20th century.
An elegant and sophisticated still life ideal for collectors of European modernism, culinary subjects, and expressive figurative painting.
