1960s Original French T55 Tolix Rectangular 2 Metre Dining Table (Model 932.2). Tolix is one of our all time favourite companies. In 1907 Frenchman Xavier Pauchard discovered that he could protect sheet metal from rusting by dipping it in molten zinc (galvanisation) and a few years later he set up his factory producing steel furniture. Tolix was the creator and founder of perhaps the most iconic cafe chair of all time, the Tolix model A, designed in 1934 and sadly now copied worldwide. Tolix used their metal working skill to also produce exquisitely designed but practical cafe/dining tables to partner their chairs. The T55 is the iconic Tolix table and we rarely see a vintage large 2 meter table in such exceptional condition. The table has spent its life indoors in a sports dining hall in Northern France so it has thankfully been saved from the ravages of the weather and is in exceptionally good structural condition. Originally white with a black sub frame and black legs the top has been repainted several times and its current colour is a light dusty pink/raspberry which gathering by the thickness, age and condition has been coated several time and we would estimate the colour is from the 70’s. The underside was overpainted at some stage. The thick well aged and heavy painted top has the most exceptional character, showing years of overpainting, age and use. Knee height: 61 cm.
