Geometric Dark Red Yomoudh Kilim Carpet with Diamonds, 1920s

The repeating elements in the center field of this Yomoudh Kilim rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned. The pile is a plain dark red. The simple design is understated, but can also provide a great design accent. The monochrome appearance of this rug fits perfectly in any environment. In the pattern of this Yomoudh Kilim, the diamonds stand out in particular. Diamonds are a rhombus standing on a point, the four equal sides of which may be jagged, stitched or hooked. The diamond is one of the oldest basic forms in oriental rugs. It has a symbolic meaning in the Islamic world: it symbolizes the immortality of the soul. It is therefore very often found as a filler motif. You are not the first to appreciate this Yomoudh Kilim. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand woven about 1920. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Yomoudh Kilim because we think it is as it is a special charm. Yomoudh kilims are hand-woven and are made up only of warp and weft threads, i. e. they do not have a thick raised pile. Kilims have the same pattern on both sides and can therefore be used on both sides. The pattern is created by weaving colored weft threads into warp threads. The weft threads of this Yomoudh kilim are made of hand-spun sheep's wool dyed with plant-based dyes. Prior to weaving the rug, sheep are shorn and the wool is then cleaned, combed and finally spun. After spinning, the wool of kilim rugs is dyed with natural dyes in an elaborate process. As a result of this traditional process, the pile of the kilims appears dry and slightly fuzzy. The warp threads of this Yomoudh kilim are made of wool. A characteristic feature of Yomoudh kilims is that one color is maintained across the entire width of each row when weaving. This means that Yomoudh kilims do not have the slits typical of some other kilims.
