Vandersteen grew up in a middle-class home in Versailles. Until 1915 he attends various schools, the last being English courses at Oxford University. Back in France, he is drafted into military service. During a gas attack, he suffers severe injuries that leave him with incurable respiratory problems. The reintegration of the soldier van der Steen after the end of the First World War succeeds only with difficulty. He loses a teaching position.
The twenties are characterized by the search for new orientation and by the struggle for daily bread. Drawing and painting serve in this situation as a means of distraction and escape from everyday life. In 1931, van der Steen married and, together with his wife, opened a small general store in Paris. This is the moment when painting becomes his central preoccupation. In an autobiographical text from 1954, van der Steen recalls: "I meet the woman who will become my life partner. Together we run a paint store. And here my vocation as a painter truly awakens. Between two customers I paint watercolors and sell them to lovers who stop to look at them. The gas poisoning I contracted during the war worsens; at night I wake up and think I am suffocating. Unable to sleep, I paint, I paint incessantly."
Since the mid-forties Germain van der Steen shows his paintings in exhibitions. In the fifties he is discovered and promoted by the art critic Anatole Jakovsky, who is one of the outstanding connoisseurs of outsider art. Numerous exhibitions at home and abroad soon followed. Despite his success as a painter, he continues to run the paint store until old age.
