Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, Work on Paper, 18th-Century, Sanguine, Framed

Sanguine on paper. Signed at lower right. On the back there is number 55 in pencil, probably a collection number, which could be that of Carlo Prayer, characterized by the black border mounting. Born in Palmanova (Udine), Giuseppe Bernardino Bison still a child moved to Brescia with his family and in that city, for his, lively disposition to art, was initiated to pictorial studies by G. Romani and S. Gandini. The family later settled in Venice, where Bison from 1779 to 1789 attended the Academy of Painting, where, in those years, the subjects taught were the design of the nude and perspective, subjects in which Bison deserved several awards. A. In Venice he became a friend of the architect G. A. Selva, the author of the Teatro la Fenice, which procured him some assignments in the early years of activity and gave him the opportunity to work as a set designer in Treviso, the Fenice in Venice, the New Trieste. The work took him to several Italian cities working a lot as a decorator, to finally arrive in 1831 in Milan, over remained until his death, participating for several years in the exhibitions of the Academy of Brera. The Bison, while living in the midst of neoclassicism and not estranged from the most up-to-date artistic movements, remained tied to the great Venetian tradition, which is revealed both in his production as a fresco painter and in his intense production from easel dedicated to genre scenes, views of Venice, characteristic "whimsical" landscapes often dominated by the remains of classical architecture in ruins, crossed by travelers and populated with figurines engaged in everyday activities in the presence of a nature captured in its most picturesque aspect. Also in this small sketch Bison proposes a fresh figure of a maiden of the people, a seller of fruit that she is proposing with a lively and natural gesture of the hand.The work is proposed in a visible frame.
