About This Piece

Vintage Design

An elegant 14K gold (56 assay value) rectangular cigarette case with rounded corners in an original case, made by the famous Russian jeweler Karl Karlovich Blank in the early 20th century. The surface of the cigarette case is decorated with exquisite patterns of fan-shaped and wavy corrugations in the Art Nouveau style, created using the finest chasing method. The central part of the hinged lid is decorated with a silver double-headed eagle, the symbol of the Russian Empire, strewn with rose-cut diamonds. This element emphasizes the item`s belonging to the imperial court and its status as a gift tray used for special occasions. The button for opening the lid is inlaid with a natural cabochon-cut sapphire.

Hallmarks: The name hallmark with the letters CB of the master jeweler Karl Karlovich Blank; A round hallmark with the image of a girl`s head turned to the left and the letter AP, corresponding to the assay mark of the city of St. Petersburg from 1904 to 1908. Historical information: Karl Karlovich Blank (1860–1923) was a Finnish citizen, a 2nd guild merchant, and the owner of a gold and silver workshop. His workshop was located at various addresses in St. Petersburg: Gorokhovaya Street, 36 (1885); Zimin Lane, 4 (1894); Ekaterininsky Canal, 23 (1915).
