Henry Alken, Horse Engraving, 1847, Etching, Framed

A rare original hand-coloured etching by Henry Alken, titled “Turning the Man Boney Couldn’t Turn!”, Plate II from the celebrated series Sporting Anecdotes, published in London by R. Ackermann in 1847.

The scene presents a satirical rural encounter rendered in Alken’s distinctive narrative style, accompanied by the original engraved dialogue beneath the image. The humorous reference to “the Man Boney” (Napoleon Bonaparte) reflects early-19th-century British caricatural wit, contrasting authority with steadfast rural obedience.

This example retains strong original hand colouring and is presented in a period-appropriate glazed frame, making it suitable for immediate display in a refined interior or curated collection.
