Exceptional Scandinavian sideboard of the Danish designer Kurt Østervig made by Brande Møbelfabrik.
Kurt Østervig is probably one of the most recognized Scandinavian designers.
His work is centered on wood; the very essence of wood represents for him the heart of all furniture.
During the 1950s and 1960s, he designed remarkable pieces, notably enfilades, some of which have been exhibited in major museums such as the MoMA in New York.
This enfilade is made of teak wood and has a light patina.
It is composed of 4 sliding doors and 3 drawers.
You can easily see the symmetry of the wood grain on these doors.
This is the result of an exceptional work of cutting the rosewood veneer.
The 2 doors on the left reveal a series of 6 drawers lined with green felt on the far left and a shelf with a mirror next to it. These two parts are separated by a partition.
The 2 doors on the right reveal a large compartment without partition with 2 shelves.
Underneath is a large central drawer and 2 smaller ones on the sides.
The grain of the wood is magnificent, especially on the top and the ribs where the knots and veins of the rosewood blend together to form beautiful patterns.
The furniture has a beautiful finish on the frame or handles.
Moreover, the color contrast is subtle, the lines are minimalist and the proportions are elegant.
This is without a doubt an exceptional piece of work in every respect.
As is often the case, the Danish furniture control pad has come off.
The bottom has been changed so the stamp of the manufacture is no longer visible.

About the Creator

Kurt Østervig

Danish furniture designer Kurt Østervig (1912-1986) began his career as a naval architect in Odense, Denmark’s third city. Changing career paths in favour of design, Østervig worked for manufacturer E. Knudsen before opening his own studio in 1947. He continued to work as a freelance designer for the rest of his career, collaborating with an array of Danish furniture brands in the mid-century era, including Bernh. Pedersen & Son, Bramin, Jason, Rolschau, Sibast, and Vamo, to name but a few.

Among Østervig’s most important designs are the Model 12 Easy Chair for Schillers Polstermøblerfabrik (1961; re-launched in 2014) and the Butterfly Dining Chair(1950s) for Brande. Østervig’s material of choice was oak, although his designs were also produced in rosewood and teak. Some sources reference Østervig’s participation in the Triennale di Milano in the 1950s and a Museum of Modern Art exhibition in the 1960s—although it is unclear which designs were shown at these venues.

Østervig was a well respected artist, known for his detailed, naturalistic drawings. His interiors projects included private homes, ships, nursing homes, hotels, and cinemas.

Today, Østervig’s designs continue to be produced by five manufacturers, but his mid-century productions remain in high demand, fetching high prices at auctions and vintage galleries around the world.
