About This Piece

Contemporary Design

In Home/Office, designer Alvaro Catalán de Ocón has been working on transforming an industrially produced object through the use of a traditional textile technique. Instead of having as a starting point a refused object which has lost its function and transforming it into some other product, the designers decided to work on a design classic; the Aluminum Chair by Charles and Ray Eames, designed in 1958, and applying to it an ornamentation full of connotations.

The starting point was not just analysing the object itself but also the company which manufactures it and the status it has achieved. Vitra's great achievement has been bringing the office to the home and taking the home to the office, and the designers wanted the project to materialize that concept through a subtle intervention that generated a strong visual impact. As a sign of respect to the chair, this intervention is non-aggressive and reversible - simply passing a needle through the holes of its standard woven net fabric and leaving its trace in the form of a Victorian petit point flower. Two icons clashing to bring to life the concept of the manufacturer of the chair.

The ornamentation of the chair is done stitch by stitch, completely by hand by a professional artisan, challenging preconceptions and accentuating the viewers' impression of just how much hand labor and how much industry is really applied to what is understood to be an industrial object. The Aluminum Chair is a global product, sold worldwide with minimum variations. The Home/Office project offers the possibility of transforming the Aluminum Chair into a local product by local artisans.

This Victorian flower intervention on petit point arrives in eight different designs, illustrated in the last image; please contact Pamono to state your preference.

About the Designers

Alvaro Catalán de Ocón

Spanish designer Alvaro Catalán de Ocón was born in Madrid in 1975. He studied business management at the Complutense University of Madrid from 1995 to 1999—earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Administration—before going on to study product design at the Institute Europeo di Design in Milan (2000-2001) and Central St. Martins in London (2001-2004). He graduated from the latter with honors and a Bachelor’s degree in Product Design. (Notably, his thesis project, the Glow Brick, is still manufactured and distributed today by Suck UK.) In 2004, Catalán de Ocón launched his own studio in Barcelona. In 2009, he relocated to Madrid, where he also teaches (since 2009) students pursuing thesis projects in the Master Product Design Lab at the Instituto Europeo di Design.

Catalán de Ocón designs furniture, lighting, and accessories. He embraces clean, elemental aesthetics, and his work is often characterized by a sense of playfulness. He is best known for his PET Lamp (2012), an ongoing project that marries industrial design and traditional craft techniques. For each lamp, artisans in South America and beyond hand-weave palm tree fibers and discarded plastic bottles to create one-of-a-kind, colorful lamps. The project debuted at Galleria Rossana Orlandi in Milan in 2013, and has since gone on to earn the AD prize for Best Emerging Design Studio (2014); the CODESPA prize in the category of SME (small and medium enterprises, 2013); as well as nominations for the London Design Museum’s best product of the year (2013); the Delta Award (2014); and the German Design Award (2015).

Catalán de Ocón’s work has been presented at several institutions and events across the globe, including, but not limited to: the Double Game solo exhibition at Galeria Muñoz-Machado (Madrid, 2015), The FAB Mind exhibition at 21_21 Design Sight (Tokyo, 2014), Waterweavers exhibition (NY, Madrid, and Washington, 2014-2015), and at Galleria Rossana Orlandi (Milan, 2011-2014), ShowMe Gallery (Portugal, 2013), Mint (London, 2012), David Gill (Miami Art Basel, 2011), Galería OA (Madrid, 2010), and ICFF (New York, 2005). He has also curated a number of exhibitions, including the 2010 Finnish Design Week exhibition, Helsinki – Madrid Findesign, in Madrid, co-curated with Pedro Feduchi and Kari Korkman.

Charles & Ray Eames

American husband-and-wife team Charles and Ray Eames are world renowned for their hugely influential modern designs across media—furniture, architecture, graphics, and products—all characterized by a playful, clean aesthetic, which has proved highly accessible and enduring. Their work can be seen to parallel the evolution of postwar American design, from the rise of the West Coast to the global proliferation of American culture.

Charles Eames was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied architecture at Washington University before being asked to leave for demanding more focus on modern designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1936, he accepted a fellowship to the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, where he became head of the new design department. There, he collaborated with Eero Saarinen on the wooden furniture that won the Museum of Modern Art’s competition for Organic Design in Home Furnishings in 1940. The series included experimental molded plywood chairs.

Ray (née Kaiser) was born in 1912 in Sacramento, California. She spent her formative years in New York, studying with painter Hans Hofmann. Along with other of Hofmann’s students, she was a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, an organization that picketed galleries who refused to show non-representational art, and which contributed to the spread of Abstract Expressionism.

The two met at Cranbrook, married in 1941, and moved to Los Angeles, where they collaborated on mass-produced, low-cost furniture designs. During the war, they earned a contract with the US Navy to develop molded plywood leg splints for injured servicemen. Their ongoing work in domestic furniture was bolstered by access to the military’s resources, and, on establishing an office in Santa Monica, led to great successes with molded plywood. The first plywood piece, the iconic ECW (Eames Chair Wood) model, was initially produced in 1946 by Evans, and is still in production today. Charles and Ray Eames designed prefab architecture to meet the postwar housing demand, and, in 1949, designed their own California home as part of the Case Study House Program sponsored by Arts & Architecture Magazine. They continued to experiment throughout their career, with materials—expanding to furniture in fiberglass, plastics, and metals—and on a spectrum of projects, ranging from toy design to photography and film.

Nearly every design developed by the Eames Office has become beloved and collectible. Standout pieces include La Chaise, developed for MoMA’s International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design (1948); Molded Fiberglass Chairs (1950); Eames Storage Unit (1950-52); Lounge Chair & Ottoman (1956); and Aluminum Group Office Chairs (1958), with pieces manufactured by both Herman Miller in the US and Vitra in Europe. The Eameses received many honors in their lifetime and after: the Organic Furniture Competition, Museum of Modern Art (1940); Emmy Award in Graphics for The Fabulous Fifties (1960); Kaufmann International Design Award (1961); 25 Year American Institute of Architects Award (1977); Eliot Norton Chair of Poetry, Harvard (1971); Queen's Gold Medal for Architecture (1979); “Most Influential Designer of the 20th Century” by WORLDESIGN (1985); Industrial Designers Society of America (1985); and The Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention, Traveling Exhibition by the Library of Congress (1999).

Charles passed away in 1978; Ray passed away exactly a decade later, to the day.
