Faye Toogood’s latest addition to her range of ceramic designs for 1882 Ltd puts a fresh spin on the forms and traditions of English creamware. Indigo Rain reinterprets the homely familiarity of blue-and-white striped crockery in a new design informed by the spirit of serendipitous discovery.

Representing a streamlined take on England's ceramic heritage, the fine earthenware employs the familiar tones of English Delftware: cream offset with a rich, deep blue. Broad bands of indigo glaze, like painterly washes of watercolour, are applied to rough canvas and then transferred to the pieces – the characteristic grain of the fabric imbues the delicate ceramics with the hardworking spirit of dark-dyed denim.

1882 Ltd is a traditional ceramic producer for the 21st century. Originally set-up by the Johnson Brothers in the heart of the Stoke-on-Trent potteries in 1882, the company today remains a family business, brought back to life in 2011 by Emily Johnson and her father Christopher.

Frequently collaborating with the most sought-after contemporary designers, Emily hopes to bring inventively designed ceramics to a wider audience while testing the skill and patience of the Master Potter, Christopher Johnson, and the incredibly talented potters, modelers, and makers that reside in Stoke-on-Trent.

Delivery will be completed by a parcel service such as UPS, DHL, or FedEx.

About the Designer

Faye Toogood

Born in 1977 in Rutland in the UK, designer Faye Toogood studied fine art and art history at Bristol University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1998. The following year, she began working closely with Min Hogg, the founding editor of The World of Interiors Magazine, as a stylist for the London-based publication. In 2004, Toogood became the magazine’s decoration editor. In 2008, she founded Studio Toogood in London along the banks of the Regents Canal. In 2013, she also launched the fashion label Toogood, with her sister, Erica Toogood.

As a designer, Faye Toogood creates highly sculptural furniture and products—ranging from cups to bespoke sculptures—as well as interior spaces and multi-sensory installations. She finds beauty in the unexpected juxtaposition of objects; she prefers to present her designs as numbered “Assemblages,” so that both her objects and the three-dimensional spaces in which they are exhibited share a larger, unified narrative. To date, her client roster includes fashion houses Phillip Lim, Alexander McQueen, Kenzo, Vivienne Westwood, and Comme des Garçons, as well as brands like Tom Dixon, Established & Sons, and Opening Ceremony.

Her work has been exhibited at some of the world’s most respected galleries and institutions, including Philips de Pury in New York and Gallery Fumi in London. In 2012, Toogood was honored with the Wallpaper* Design Award for Best Use of Material.

She lives and works in London.
