About This Piece

A modernist portrait by the Swedish auction painter Ivan Jordell (1901-1965). The picture was painted by the artist in the 50's. Hand-signed by the artist in the right corner. Made in pastel technique. Preserved in the original period setting.

Ivan Per Erik Jordell, born on July 19, 1901 in Katrineholm, died on September 7, 1965 in Malmö, was a Swedish painter.

Jordell studied at Skånska målarskolan 1930-1931, but was otherwise self-taught. His motives were mainly figurative motifs, still lifes, cityscapes and people. In gloomy colors and a rough, heavy form, he portrayed lonely people in a proletarian environment, including circus performers, street girls and Gypsies.

Jordell staged his first exhibition at the Malmö Museum in 1932, and then for years he participated in collective exhibitions with the Skåne art association and its own separate exhibitions at the Gothenburg Art Gallery. In the 1940s, apart from oil painting, he worked with tempera. From 1937 he was a member of the Aura artistic group.

He is represented at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Kulturen Malmö Museum, Göteborgs Konstmuseum, Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Norrköping Konstmuseum and Ystads Konstmuseum.
