About This Piece

Painting “Leiputrija” /“Utopia”/ was created when artist Janis Straupe was only 18 years old and studied in Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts. Janis Straupe was young, artist in making, living in ussr, where western culture was banned. He was deeply inspired by Salvador Dalí, he saw on some illegal 80ties diapositives. Most of his days he spent studying art, painting in the evening, and partying hard with his study companions. This painting reflects joyful and crazy life artist was surrounded at the time. Youth, art and a lot of alcohol-perfect utopia.

Janis Straupe is born in Riga, Latvia, 1962. He has been working with wood for more than 35 years. In younger years he wanted to become a painter and created several drawings while Janis was a student, but life made other decisions and now he has become well known large scale wooden furniture designer and sculptor. Taking inspiration from nature and geometry, he makes sculptural objects, design pieces, decorative objects and fully functional pieces of custom-made furniture. One of his most famous creations is the Beetle cabinet, a wooden cabinet in shape of giant beetle. Janis likes to think of himself as an inventor who expresses himself through wood. His custom-made pieces of furniture are as much sculptures as functional items.

Delivery will take place between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
A wooden crate may be used for intercontinental shipments for maximum protection.
Item will be left in its packaging after delivery.
A signature will be required upon delivery.
