Jo Hummel - Twilight - Original Painting Dimensions : 90 x 90 cm Medium : Acrylic and Emulsion on Watercolour Paper and Ply Jo Hummel's work is characterised by a painted and paper collaged surface on which she employs spontaneous variations of space, colour and form. Although her painting collages are physically engaged and materially driven the context is purposefully anthropological and Hummel’s works are informed by human habits and behaviour. Hummel runs experiments where the process often determines the outcome and provides a safe arena for improvisation, a place where rational procedures can co- exist alongside intuition. In doing this she explores the unpredictable nature of intuition and spontaneity - her practice functioning as a simulation of decision making experiences which enable her to grasp, and make use of sensations such as anxiety or serenity. And it is via these conflicting emotional states of comfort, satisfaction, anxiousness, repulsion and so on that Hummel is able to tap into the ubiquitously felt state of human uncertainty. The social structures we all exist in guide and interfere with how we feel and what we choose to do on a daily basis. Our social class, religion, gender and ethnicity all play a part in what we deem pleasant or unpleasant. 2019 Transformer I, Solo Exhibition, &Gallery (affiliated), Edinburgh Transformer II, Solo Exhibition, Nordic Art Agency (represented), Sweden Safety at Sea, Solo exhibition, After Nyne Gallery (represented), London 2014 Panic of the Human Fancy, Aspex Guildhall Gallery Portsmouth Group Exhibitions and Art Fairs: 2020 Dear Painting, Nordic Art Agency, Malmo, Sweden Construct, Well Hung Gallery, London London Art Fair, Represented by After Nyne Gallery, London 2019 Object Meditation, After Nyne Gallery, London London Art Fair, represented by After Nyne Gallery, London The Drawing Room, Sid Motion Gallery, London 2018 The Other Art Fair, Brooklyn, Brooklyn Expo Centre New York Deep End Echo, 2 person exhibition with Stephen Smith, Sid Motion Gallery, London Unrestricted, &Gallery, Edinburgh Affordable Art Fair, Milan, Stockholm, Brussels, Battersea, Liberty Gallery 2017 Turns on the Tarmac, (with: Nick Jensen, Adam Hedley), Sid Motion Gallery London 2014 RA Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Arts, London 2012 Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood space, London and touring 2011 Afternoon Tea, 53rd Venice Biennale, WW Gallery London/ Italy
