About This Piece

Vintage Design

Designed by Mario Bellini and produced by B&B Italia in the late 1970s, Le Stelle is one of the most emblematic creations of Italian design of the period, an expression of the formal and technological research that made the partnership between Bellini and the Novedrate-based company famous.
The sofa stands out for its fluid, enveloping silhouette, built on an iron and steel frame that supports padding in cold-formed polyurethane foam and Dacron® fiber, cutting-edge materials developed by B&B Italia in collaboration with the company's research center during the golden age of Italian industrial design.
The soft yet architectural line opens in a visual embrace: the sloping armrests project outward like wings, while the curved backrest and generous cushions define a profound, informal comfort.
The name Le Stelle evokes a cosmic dimension, typical of Bellini's poetic and experimental language, who in those years conceived the sofa as a microcosm of form, function, and material.
The upholstery is the original vintage one, made of stretch fabric with diagonal stripes in shades of pink and salmon, a rare and refined color combination that retains its authenticity intact.
The original B&B Italia label, still present under the seat, attests to its provenance and the patented materials (Lycra®, Polysoft®, Dacron®), a direct testimony to the company's technological philosophy.
Beyond its aesthetic value, Le Stelle represents a historic document of radical Italian design, in which comfort and experimentation coexist in perfect balance. This example, perfectly preserved in its original integrity, is a collector's item for enthusiasts and connoisseurs of 20th-century design, as well as a sculptural and poetic presence in any contemporary setting. It shows minimal signs of aging, such as some stains on the sides, as shown in photographs. These can be removed with specific treatment, but it is generally in excellent vintage condition.

Mario Bellini is one of the most influential Italian architects and designers of the twentieth century, a key figure in the golden age of Italian design. Born in Milan in 1935, he developed a design language in which technological experimentation, sculptural sensibility, and attention to human behavior merged into soft, fluid, and profoundly innovative forms. As design director for Olivetti in the 1960s and 1970s, he created iconic objects such as the Divisumma calculators and revolutionary office machines, now on display at the MoMA in New York, which dedicated a solo exhibition to him in 1987. At the same time, he collaborated with leading Italian companies—B&B Italia, Cassina, Vitra, Brionvega—creating furnishings that have become symbols of international design. As an architect, he has designed museums, conference centers, and major public works worldwide, from the Tokyo Design Center to the new Musée du Louvre. His vast and diverse oeuvre is considered a benchmark for its ability to combine formal poetry, technical innovation, and a humanistic understanding of design.

B&B Italia is one of the most important and innovative companies in contemporary Italian design. Founded in 1966 by Piero Ambrogio Busnelli, it quickly became an international benchmark for the industrial production of high-tech and aesthetically pleasing furnishings. A pioneer in the use of experimental materials and processes—such as cold-foaming polyurethane, developed in its in-house research center—the company has redefined the way we conceive upholstered furniture, opening up new formal and production possibilities. Over the decades, it has collaborated with the world's leading designers, including Mario Bellini, Gaetano Pesce, Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola, and Zaha Hadid, creating an iconic collection that includes objects that have become symbols of Made in Italy. with a global presence and an identity deeply rooted in Italian design culture, B&B Italia continues to represent a model of excellence, combining research, innovation, and a sophisticated vision of contemporary living.

About the Creator

Mario Bellini

Mario Bellini

World-renowned architect and designer Mario Bellini has been an influential figure in Italian design since the 1960s. His prolific body of work spans architecture, urban planning, and furniture and industrial design.

Bellini was born in Milan in 1935. He graduated with a degree in architecture from Milan’s Polytechnic University in 1959.  Shortly after, he became the design director at La Rinascente, a popular chain of Italian department stores. In 1963, he was hired by tech-firm Olivetti as their chief design consultant. In the same year, he established the architectural and design firm Studio Bellini in Milan with business partner Marco Romano.

Although Bellini’s designs were less iconoclastic than his contemporary postmodern designers, they were no less innovative and are characterized by original, organic, technically complex forms. Iconic designs include the Amanta Chair (1966) and Le Bambole Sofa (1972) both for B&B Italia; the Kar-a-Sutra van (1972) for Citroën, which was exhibited at Italy: The New Domestic Landscape at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1972; the Divisumma 18 Electronic Calculator (1973) for Olivetti; the 412 Cab Chair (1976-7) and Victoria Series (1982) for Cassina; and the Bellini Chair (1998) for Heller, which won a Compasso d’Oro in 2001. Bellini has also designed for major international companies such as Artemide, Brionvega, Fiat, Flos, Pirelli, Renault, Rosenthal, Tecno, Vitra, and Yamaha.

From the 1980s, Bellini dedicated himself almost entirely to architecture. His architectural feats include the Villa Erba Exhibition and Convention Centre in Cernobbio, Como (1986-1990); the Tokyo Design Centre (1988-1992); the Natuzzi America Headquarters in North Carolina (1996-1998); the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (1996-2003); the Deutsche Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt (2006-11); the City History Museum of Bologna (2003-12); the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre in Paris (2005-12); and the new Milan Convention Centre (2008-12), which is the largest in Europe. The prolific architect has many Italian projects currently underway or just completed including the refurbishment of terminal three at Roma-Fiumicino Airport (2014-2017), the Erzelli Science and Technology Park in Genoa, and the new Antiquarium Museum in Rome (2015-2017). At the time of writing, Bellini has various projects that are still at the design stage including the ‘Eco-City’ of Zhenjiang in China (2013-2018) and a large residential, cultural, and sports complex in Qatar (2014-2022).

From 1985 until 1991, Bellini edited the influential architectural and design magazine, Domus. In 1987, the New York Museum of Modern Art dedicated its first retrospective to the Italian master, honoring his life’s work and committing twenty-five pieces to its permanent collection. As well as being the focus of two more exhibitions, Bellini also curated countless art, design, and architecture exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. The number of accolades awarded to the designer-architect is almost endless. To date, he has received eight Compasso d’Oro awards, the Medaglia d’Oro (2004)—which recognizes Bellini’s contribution to design and architecture around the world, the Ambrogino d’Oro for civic merit (2011), and many many others.

Today, Bellini leads seminars and workshops at universities and academic institutions around the world.

About the Maker

B&B Italia / C&B Italia

B&B Italia / C&B Italia

The international design company B&B Italia began in 1973 when Piero Ambrogio Busnelli took over C&B Italia, the company he had co-founded with Cesare Cassina. The renamed B&B was thus more of an evolution than a completely new enterprise. Busnelli—who was born in 1926 in Meda, in the northern province of Lombardy—was a true visionary in post-war Italy. As a young designer he surrounded himself with other like-minded artists, and later took chances on up-and-coming talents, like Mario Bellini and Gaetano Pesce, who later followed Busnelli to B&B. From the beginning, the company wanted to set itself apart as a strong, modern Italian brand that was based on an industrial model, utilizing both high-tech production methods and high-tech materials—including plastics and polyurethane foams. It quickly established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of modern Italian design in the second half of the 20th century.

Busnelli located the headquarters in Novedrate in Como, near Milan. It was designed in 1972 by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, who had just finished jointly designing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the influence is clear. The building’s brave industrial “inside out” aesthetic showcased Busnelli’s willingness to take risks, as well as predict future design stars.

In the mid-1970s, B&B Italia launched Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole sofa (1972). The structureless, yet plump couch pushed the boundaries of design and secured a place for B&B Italia at the forefront of the international design scene, and at the receiving end of many prestigious design prizes. The advertising campaign for Le Bambole provoked as many reactions as the design itself, featuring provocative images taken by photographer Oliviero Toscani of the bare-chested model Donna Jordan on top of Bellini's sofa, and was exhibited at Milan’s Salone del Mobile.

Since then, B&B Italia has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned designers and architects, including , Mario Bellini, Jeffrey Bernett, David Chipperfield, Antonio Citterio, Naoto Fukasawa, Zaha Hadid, Chris Howker, Vico Magistretti, Jean-Marie Massaud, Gaetano Pesce, Paolo Piva, Richard Sapper, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Richard Schultz, Ettore Sottsass, Studio Kairos, Patricia Urquiola, Jakob Wahner, and Marcel Wanders, among others.

B&B Italia has won four Compasso d’Oro Awards. The first was for Studio Kairos’ Sisamo Wardrobe in 1974, and later Bellini’s Le Bambole in 1979, and Citterio’s Sity Sofa in 1987. In 1989 B&B Italia became the first design manufacturer to be awarded a Compasso d’Oro. The award was given to B&B Italia for "the constant work of integration carried out in order to combine the values of scientific and technological research with those necessary to the functionality and expressiveness of its products." Since the company’s inception in 1966, designers have created over 1000 designs and prototypes, many of which are still in production.

In 2011, Busnelli’s sons, Giorgio and Emanuele, bought the company back from the private equity firm Opera, who obtained a majority stake in 2002. The pair run the company since the death of their father in 2014. In 2016, B&B Italia celebrated its 50th anniversary by showcasing its latest range of limited-edition pieces at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan.
