Vintage Design

A 19th century mahogany Heals of London Library Chair. Beautiful, hand carved seat. Fully restored. Dated 1884, with auction house provenance and valuation from 10 years ago. Original oxblood leather throughout. With a red padded deep buttoned back with matching seat pad enclosed in a nice solid mahogany frame, wonderfully shaped serpentine arms, standing on front baluster turned legs with brass caps and castors out swept rear legs united with a deep bowed crinoline stretcher.

This particular chair is illustrated in 'Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design' (page 166) which dates the chair at 1884 and attributes it to the 19th century furniture company 'Heal'. This was a family run business in which Ambrose Heal's Arts and Craft designs became internationally famous. The firm is the forerunner of the present day furniture company 'Heal's'.
