A passion for craftsmanship and functionality drove award-winning Milanese Advertising Director, Paolo Calcagni to launch Sotow, an artisan furniture company, which specializes in metallic tubular chairs, handmade in Italy.
Born in 1958 and educated at Liceo Artistico Di Brera, Calcagni’s CV is certainly not typical of the average furniture designer but having worked as a director for more than a hundred national and international clients, it is impressive nonetheless. In 1992, he became a subsidiary of the English production company Voyager, (directing commercials for Vodafone, Apletise, Philips, Volkswagen, and Britvic). Subsequently, he worked for several international production companies, including NY-Independent Artist (USA), Mia Film (South America), John Spary.Ass (Great Britain), Edie Saeta (Spain), Daniel Israel (Australia), and Nexus Film (Japan), as well as with internationally renowned actresses by the likes of Letizia Casta, Mariagrazia Cucinotta, Isabel Pasco, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Penelope Cruz.
With no formal design training behind him, Calcagni’s philosophy is simple—he believes that even household necessities, such as a chair, should make people feel happy and this can be achieved through aesthetics. Calcagni’s diverse artistic background in commercial film has no doubt given him a rich grounding in visual inspiration and composition. Adhering to classic silhouettes, the designs, which feature playful colors and graphic lines, are inspired by the world of sport and sneakers in palette and materials. Boasting an effortless elegant simplicity and a vibrant color palette, Sotow’s collection of tubular metal chairs offers an array of joyful statements in Italian craftsmanship to choose from for any room at home or work.
