Mid-Century Polar Sculpture by Göran Wärff for Kosta

Polar's maximalist expression gives the works strength as sculptural interior objects where the function as a candle lantern is subordinate. The production technology enables the glass mass to flow out at the bottom and create a uniqueness in each object. When the work is moved around the room, another dimension is added by creating an optical illusion.

Göran Adolf Henry Wärff, born September 17, 1933 in Slite, Othem parish in Gotland County, is a Swedish designer and glass artist.

Göran Wärff is the son of the pharmacist Harry Wärff and the textile teacher Inga Nyberg. He studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Braunschweig, Germany in 1956–1958 and handicrafts at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm 1958–1959, as well as painting studies in London. Together with his than wife Ann Wärff, he worked as a designer at Pukeberg's glass works 1960–1964. From 1964 they worked under Erik Rosén at Kosta glass works (from 1975 Kosta Boda). In 1968, they received the Lunning Prize for jointly designed utility glasses, including the Brava service series. He exhibited separately at Form in Malmö and at Varberg's museum. He participated in a large number of handicraft exhibitions at, among others, Liljevalchs konsthall, Röhsska konstslöjdmuseet and in Malmö, Karlstad and Varberg.

He has performed a number of public works of art, including the Sydney Opera House in 1976 and the glass baptismal font in Växjö Cathedral. One of his service glazes for Kosta is Rondo. He also worked with the design of children's furniture in wood made in a robust and imaginative style.

Göran Wärff was married in 1960–1972 to Anne-Lise Schaeffer (born 1937) and from 2000 to Lena Maria Nilsson (born 1948).
