Mid-Century Stoneware Handle Vase from Piesche & Reif

Vintage Design

A tall handled stoneware pottery vase with hand applied black and white stripes and dots in relief from a light gray background. It is marked on the base with its identifying numeric cipher indicating that it was produced by Piesche & Reif (aka VEB Lausitzer) in the former GDR.

ANTON PIESCHE (b.1878) was a German ceramicist who purchased an existing ceramics factory in 1900 in the small village of Kamenz near Dresden. We know that Piesche had two sons, Otto and Willibald, but the company's history prior to 1945 is still a mystery. We also know that in 1945/46 Piesche merged with Max Reif to become “Brüder Piesche & Reif Kamenz”. Additionally, in 1945, Pesche’s sons took over the factory of Paul Schreier in nearby Bischofswerda and turned it into a branch of Piesche & Reif, but in 1953, the state converted it into the publicly owned business, or Volkseigener Betrieb, ‘VEB Braun & Kunst Töpferei Bischofswerda’. The company existed in this form until 1972, when it became ‘VEB Lausitzer Keramik Werk II, Bischofswerda’ making it the second factory in the newly created VEB Lausitzer Keramik.
