A monumental Brutalist bronze wall sculpture of museum-quality presence (circa 1960s/1970s), stylistically attributed to the renowned South German sculptor Walter Haaf (born 1935 in Zell am Harmersbach).

This extraordinary masterpiece of post-war modernist sacred art originates from a documented church or sacred space demolition in the Ortenau district of Baden. with an impressive height of 108 cm and a massive weight of over 16.5 kg, the object, produced using an elaborate bronze casting process, possesses an enormous physical and architectural presence.

Design & Aesthetics:

The design radically breaks with traditional conventions and is entirely devoid of figurative representation. The powerful arms of the cross and the integrated, radiating halo are formed as deep, sculptural grooves. The highly structured, fluted surface is reminiscent of the rough textures of cracked tree bark or jagged rock – a prime example of the primal formal language of European Brutalism and Art Informel. A geometric, square negative space at the very center of the sculpture creates a fascinating interplay of mass, light, and the space behind it.

Condition & Patina:

The object is in excellent, untouched original vintage condition. The bronze boasts a magnificent age patina in deep dark brown and warm earth tones. A subtle, absolutely authentic verdigris (a noble patina) has formed in the deep grooves and channels, masterfully emphasizing the relief-like depth of the casting. The solid, original mounting pin is located at the base of the sculpture, attesting to its historical function as a processional cross and underscoring the raw, workshop-like character of this unique piece.
