Murano Bottle Jars with Lids in Blown Blue Glass,  Set of 2

Delicious and harmonious pair of bottles with blue blown glass lid; the two bottles have been made in a magical, fascinating and artistic place: an artisan furnace in Murano; while the glass was being melted in the furnace the cobalt pigment was added to give the glass it's dark turquoise color, extracted from the furnace, the melted glass was mouth-blown with a special rod by a master glassmaker, who hot-molded it with special tools to give it the desired shape, the object was removed from the rod which was used to blow it with special scissors (see photo 14), then put in the tempera furnace where it cooled for many hours; then, completely devoid of heat, it was taken to the grinding department where expert grinders proceeded to polishing, finishing with diamond wheel and finally to polishing.

These bottles are known as ''albarelli''. (in English they can be called ''majolica jar''); with this term we indicate a container used in ancient pharmacies to contain spices, herbs, ointments and medicinal powders; the albarello was born in Italy in the medieval period, at the time of Petrarch, Dante and Boccaccio, it was made in majolica and decorated with elaborate designs of flowers, volutes, Greek, Gothic leaves and masks, in an explosion of colours; in Murano they wanted to make a more stylized and elegant version, for the refined Venetian furnishings, so it was that the albarelli in blown glass were born, aesthetically less aggressive than those in majolica, but certainly more sophisticated and elegant. Our albarelli are not medieval, but they are certainly the result of the artisan and centuries-old wisdom of the Master glassmakers of Murano. They were produced in Murano between 1949 and 1950.
