The wooden panel has been used since ancient times and is widespread in Europe with altar paintings and wedding chests (cassoni) in Italy from the twelfth century and the rest of Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; he remained the preferred medium of painters of northern schools in the seventeenth century.
