About This Piece

Vintage Design

The Eye or Polifemo floor lamp, designed by Angelo Lelii in 1956 and produced by Arredoluce in Italy, features a slender metal pole with a flared top and an orb that houses the bulb. This orb pivots within a socket positioned about two-thirds up the shaft. The lamp combines a marble base, a painted nickel shaft and an eye made of brass and glass, reflecting Lelii's sleek and futuristic design direction. Just take a look at that gorgeous patina on the brass!
This very rare and exceptional piece is in good vintage condition, making it a great investment and ready to illuminate any interior.

Angelo Lelii (1911–1989) was born in Ancona, but later relocated with his family to Milan, where he pursued studies at the University of Decorative Arts in Monza. By 1939, he established a small workshop in Monza, crafting lamps and chandeliers celebrated for their sleek lines, meticulous craftsmanship and innovative use of technology. Despite an interruption during wartime, his designs gained recognition when three were featured in Domus Magazine in 1946. In 1947, Lelii founded Arredoluce in Monza, marking the beginning of collaborations with esteemed modernist designers like Domus cofounder and furniture maker Gio Ponti, Memphis Group member Ettore Sottsass and designers such as Franco Albini, Achille Castiglioni and Nanda Vigo. Lelii's best-known design is likely his Triennale floor lamp model 12128, unveiled at the Milan Triennale in 1947.
Other iconic pieces include the Cobra table lamp, the Tris lamp, the Eye floor light and the President table lamp. Lelii's innovative spirit led him to experiment with halogen bulbs and integrate transformers into his designs, a feature seen in many of Arredoluce's floor lamps. His lighting objects are characterized by their simplicity, minimalistic elegance and inherent sensitivity. This unique approach cemented Arredoluce's reputation for producing high-quality lighting with functional yet clean designs. This enduring appeal makes Lelii's creations highly sought after by collectors and mid-century design enthusiasts, valued both as technical masterpieces and sound investments.

About the Creator

Angelo Lelli

Angelo Lelli

Italian designer-entrepreneur Angelo Lelli—also spelled “Lelii,” as indicated by in a surviving signature—founded the innovative lighting company Arredoluce in Manza, Italy, in the years surrounding World War II. Little biographical information on Lelli has survived, but some sources indicate he lived from 1911 to 1979. He was, nevertheless, an active and influential participant in the postwar Italian design boom and is regarded today to be a key protagonist of modernist-era lighting design, on par with his most successful contemporaries like Gino Sarfatti of Arteluce and Giuseppe Ostuni of Oluce.

According to many sources, Lelli began designing lamps in his basement before the war and caught his first big break in 1946 when his first three designs were featured in the pages of a Domus publication. The magazine—which was originally founded by design icon Gio Ponti and was, at that time, under the direction of Italian architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers—promoted pioneering designers and architects in Italy who were embracing the new functionalist trend.

By the following year, Lelli had founded Arredoluce (though some sources say the company already existed in 1939). As the company’s director and in-house designer, Lelli was instrumental in propelling Italian design to international prominence. Through Arredoluce, Lelli was responsible for the production of hundreds of artful lighting collections that have become highly sought-after on the vintage market.

Arredoluce’s vanguard collections ranged from table and floor lamps to sconces and chandeliers, developed in collaboration with design luminaries like Franco Albini, Achille and Pier Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Mario Tedeschi, and Nanda Vigo. The company’s modernist sensibilities were expressed in minimalist forms that took advantage of new technologies, often featuring articulated arms and directional shades.

Lelli’s most iconic design for Arredoluce is the three-armed Model 12128 "Triennale" Floor Lamp, the design date of which is cited by most Italian sources at 1947, while others place it later circa 1951-53. The name is most certainly drawn from the attention it garnered in an early postwar Triennale exhibition. Notably, this particular design was also manufactured in the US by Richards-Morgenthau for Raymor Corporation.

Other standouts from Lelli include the Tris Floor Lamp (ca. 1946), Stella Ceiling Light (ca. 1950), Cobra Table Lamp (ca. 1962-64), and President Lamp (ca. 1970), as well as a range of low voltage, high intensity “eye-ball” shaped spotlights in the 1960s.

Arredoluce produced lighting until its closure in 1979.

About the Maker

Arredoluce

Arredoluce

Italian lighting manufacturer Arredoluce was an important proponent of postwar Italian lighting design and was founded by designer-entrepreneur Angelo Lelli (sometimes written Lelii). Lelli is thought to have established Arredoluce in 1947, the year after his lamp designs were included in the well-regarded Domus magazine.

Although some sources state that Arredoluce existed as early as 1939, it is improbable that the company was able to manufacture during Italy's involvement in World War II, and most sources therefore agree that a postwar date of establishment is more likely.

In addition to owning Arredoluce, Lelli also designed prolifically for his company for many years, and his modernist aesthetic undoubtedly played a role in bringing Italian lighting design to the international stage in the 1950s and 1960s.

Arredoluce lighting spanned floor  and table lamps ,  sconces , pendants , and ceiling lights , many of which were designed by Lelli himself. Other iconic designers who worked with Arredoluce included Franco Albini, Achille and Pier Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Mario Tedeschi, and Nanda Vigo. Whereas many Arredoluce chandeliers and pendants are made from brass and feature opaline glass shades, the floor lamps and table lamps tend to be more minimalist in style, often featuring adjustable shades and articulated arms.

Perhaps Lelli’s best known design for Arredoluce is the Model 12128 "Triennale", a three-armed floor lamp (1947, according to most Italian sources, or 1951-53 from other sources) exhibited at a postwar Triennale. The design was also licensed in the United States by Richards-Morgenthau for the Raymor Corporation.

Lelli continued to design and run Arredoluce until its closure in 1979. Today, Arredoluce’s designs are well-received on the vintage market, many of which are highly-sought after by Italian design enthusiasts and lighting collectors alike.
