Pair of Louis XVI Armchairs, Directory Style, Napoleon III Period, s. XIX – France

Exquisite pair of Louis XVI style armchairs, made during the Napoleon III period (1852-1870), in France. Simple structure, in richly carved and polychrome white wood, upholstered in lime yellow. They present contrast between the curve of the armrest and the straight and square backrest, Directory style. The structure has grooves, visible especially on the legs, which also have a square pillar at the top, with a flower-shaped carving, which unites it with the structure of the armchair, in the purest Louis XVI style.

Very special for their shape and large size, they are truly exquisite and refined. with a classic and timeless style, these armchairs can be placed in both living rooms and bedrooms.

About the Louis XVI Style and the Directory Style

For some authors, Louis XVI is a style with a markedly “feminine” tendency, and it should even have been named after “Marie Antoinette.” It contrasts with the Louis It is characterized by lightness, harmony and proportion, leaving aside the heaviness and excess of the styles it follows. It stands as a more discreet and elegant style than its predecessor.

The Directory style is a style of furniture and decoration in vogue from 1795 to 1803, marking the transition between the Louis XVI and Empire styles. It is a style of neoclassical inspiration, characterized by the simplicity of its lines, inspired by Roman objects from the 1st century AD. C. from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
