About This Piece

Vintage Design

The "Freeform" sofa & Ottoman designed by Isamu Noguchi in 1946, fully differentiated from other designs of that time, fluid, slim and organic. The "Freeform" sofa is certainly one of the most elegant sofas ever made.
The sculptural style of Noguchi and its commitment to organic design language permanently influenced the design of the 1950s.

The Freeform sofa & the Ottoman were produced in a limited number around 1950 and the few remaining copies of this time were produced in auctions.
In 2002, the Vitra Design Museum finally received the license to produce a completely authentic edition of the Freeform sofas, this sofa is one of them (see label in a photo above).
* Isamu Noguchi sculptural and poetic design language also shows in his Freeform sofa & Ottoman, whose sculptural form is reminiscent of flat, oversized river pebbles, which have been gently ground over time by a rippling stream.
* Noguchi himself described this design as "soft rock".
* Thanks to the organic shape, the sofa looks light and elegant despite its extensive cushion.

Material
* Frame/support structure: beech wood.
* Corpus and seat cushion: wooden frame with polyurethane.
* Feet: maple nature.
* Reference: New relief by a professional upholsterer commissioned by us, not removable!
Conditional material: very high quality lambskin imitation (deceptively real) in color: cream. Soft, curly fur imitation in deluxe quality with a great handle, soft fluffy and extremely hard-wearing.
The special highlight are the 100,000 rubble tours to Martinndale, which this reference material has. Therefore, the cover is very hard -wearing and can also be used very well in public space without restrictions.

Dimensions
Sofa: width 300 cm x depth 130 cm x height 72 cm x seat height 32 cm
Ottoman: width 120 cm x depth 71 cm x height 32 cm

Condition
The object is in a properly restored (new cover), so very nice and very good condition.
On closer inspection, in this case, of course, there are still few, smaller and insignificant traces of a vintage object. The upholstery is still very well preserved and firm, since the sofa was not used often and not long and served more as a decorative object.
... but all tracks are usually only a little more visible when you look at without being serious ...

* The pictures are part of the of the condition and show the general state and the most important flaws. We therefore ask you to take a good look at the pictures above *

About the Creator

Isamu Noguchi

Sculptor, designer, architect, and craftsman Isamu Noguchi was born Isamu Gilmour in Los Angeles in 1904 to Japanese poet Yonejiró (Yone) Noguchi and American writer Leonie Gilmour. He moved with his mother to Japan when he was two years old. In 1918, he returned to the U.S. to study at a high school in Indiana. Four years later, he graduated under the taken name of Sam Gilmour and enrolled at New York’s Columbia University to study medicine. With a growing desire to explore sculpture, he began taking night classes at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School in 1924. He dropped out of Columbia soon after and renamed himself Isamu Noguchi. In 1927, he won a Guggenheim Fellowship and traveled to Paris to assist sculptor Constantin Brancusi. The sculptural sensibility Noguchi encountered there influenced his aesthetic. His work—which ultimately spanned sculpture, gardens, furniture, lighting, architecture, set design, and ceramics—was characterized by simplicity and organic abstraction, a blurring of the artistic disciplines, and simultaneously elevated by a sense of experimentation and collaboration with other artists.

Noguchi returned to the U.S. in 1929 and befriended R. Buckminster Fuller and choreographer Martha Graham, which led to a series of creative collaborations. Between 1930 and 1932, Noguchi traveled to Paris, Beijing, and Japan, finding himself particularly inspired by ancient Buddhist rock gardens. In 1937, he designed his first mass-manufactured piece, the Zenith Radio Nurse intercom. In 1942, he set up a studio in New York’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.

During World War II, Noguchi campaigned to improve the lives of interned Japanese-Americans in the U.S. In 1950, after marrying Japanese movie star Yamaguchi Yoshiko, Noguchi returned to Japan to design a memorial garden dedicated to his father at Keiõ University. In 1951, he contributed to Japanese reconstruction by helping revive the city of Gifu’s paper lantern industry with a modernization of the lantern’s design.

In 1961, he converted a factory in Long Island City, New York, into a home and studio; the space ultimately became the Noguchi Museum. In his later years, he maintained studios in both Japan and the U.S. Between the 1950s and 1980s, Noguchi designed stone gardens for UNESCO in Paris, Yale University, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem; sets for choreographer Merce Cunningham; and furniture for the likes of Herman Miller and Knoll International.

Noguchi died in New York in 1988.

About the Maker

Vitra

Swiss founders Willi and Erika Fehlbaum launched Vitra in 1934 as a shopfitting business in the Basel region, near the border of Germany and Switzerland. During a visit to America in 1953, the Fehlbaums became enamored with the innovative designs of Charles and Ray Eames—known today for the iconic Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman (1956). In 1957, Vitra obtained licensing rights to produce Herman Miller furniture for the European market and began to manufacture the work of Charles and Ray Eames, as well as George Nelson—famous for the Pop Art-inspired Marshmallow Sofa (1956).

In 1967, after working closely with Danish designer Verner Panton, Vitra introduced the Panton Chair (originally conceived in 1959/60). The design was deemed a modernist landmark because it was the first wholly plastic, stackable, cantilever chair made in one piece. Vitra soon became internationally recognized as a company that collaborates with talented, progressive designers to create cutting-edge, high-quality products.

Rolf Fehlbaum (b. 1941), eldest son to Willi and Erika, became Vitra’s Chief Executive in 1977. In 1981, after a disastrous fire at the Vitra facilities in Weil am Rhein, Germany, Rolf commissioned British architect Nicholas Grimshaw to design a new manufacturing hall. More architectural commissions followed, and the Vitra Campus (as the architectural ensemble came to be known) earned acclaim for the way its high-concept, contemporary buildings integrated into the surrounding natural landscape and residential areas. Architect Frank Gehry designed the first public building, the Vitra Design Museum (1989), to house Rolf’s ever-growing collection of chairs, the largest collection in the world.  Other buildings on campus were designed by the esteemed architects Tadao Ando (Conference Pavilion, 1993), Zaha Hadid (Fire Station, 1993), Alvaro Siza (Factory Building, 1994), and Herzog & de Meuron (VitraHaus, 2010).

After thirty years, Vitra’s partnership with Herman Miller was mutually terminated in 1984. Vitra, however, acquired the design rights to pieces by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson for Europe and the Middle East. For six decades, Vitra has been producing first-class furniture from iconic and internationally renowned designers and architects. Other famous designs in Vitra’s collection include Isamu Noguchi’s Noguchi Table (1939), Shiro Kuramata’s How High the Moon Chair (1986), Borek Sípek's Ota Otanek Chair (1988), Philippe Starck's Louis XX Stacking Chair (1992), and numerous patterns and textiles created by Alexander Girard. Vitra has also won countless design-related awards, such as the Lucky Strike Design Award in 1994, and their pieces can be found in design museums around the world, including the Tate Modern and Design Museum in London, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and, of course, Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein.
