About This Piece

Vintage Design

German sewing machines were widespread and highly regarded, but due to the political climate between France and Germany (1870/1871), their origin was often concealed. They were frequently renamed by the retailer who manufactured the cabinet and its base, in this case, Thierry AULNER of Sierck, France.

His name is found cast in the base and on the machine's nameplate.

The German factory that manufactured the sewing machine was probably "Haid & Neu." The serial number on the brass plate, 2032368, would correspond to the year 1875, as after 1900, all serial numbers began with one or two letters.

Floral decals, which are water transfers typical of the Victorian era, and marquetry inlays on wooden furniture.
The cast iron is richly worked with rounded motifs typical of Art Nouveau or the traditional period leading to Art Deco.
The top is walnut veneer on oak with a measuring strip, damaged in places (see photos), and has a drawer (accessories included).
The protective case, with its "cradle" design, has a domed shape and still has its original key.
