This exceptional Sheaf of Wheat dining table base is a signature design by Elinor and John McGuire for the renowned California-based company McGuire Furniture. Originally conceived in the 1970s, this specific piece is a high-quality production from the late 1980s, featuring a handwritten date mark ("3-89") on the internal structural framework, confirming its mid-century heritage.

The base is a masterpiece of organic modernism. It is masterfully constructed from a dense bundle of natural bamboo stalks, cinched at the waist with a thick, decorative braided rattan band to create the iconic "sheaf of wheat" hourglass silhouette. The top surface presents a stunning, mosaic-like texture formed by the exposed circular ends of the clustered bamboo poles, providing a perfectly level and visually captivating support for a glass top.

Reflecting the effortless elegance of the "California Coastal" aesthetic, this rare oval version is particularly sought after for its sculptural presence and ability to anchor larger dining spaces. Its warm, natural patina and architectural form make it a timeless centerpiece that pairs beautifully with both vintage and contemporary interiors.

The base is in very good vintage condition. The structural integrity is excellent, with the bamboo stalks and rattan binding remaining tight and secure. It shows a beautiful, age-appropriate patina and minor signs of wear consistent with its history.
