Iconic wall sconce with a legendary design; it consists of a brass hemisphere from which eight tubes of different heights radiate; those of larger diameter, inside which the electrical wires pass, have at the top the four points of light with the characteristic black metal cone lamps; on the four tubes of smaller diameter are placed small stars; other stars are applied to the bottom of the brass cap. The style of the wall sconce is the "Space Age", this aesthetic current was born at the dawn of the space age, commonly attributed to the launch of Sputnik in October 1957 and continued until the '70s; the objects of that period are characterized by essential volumes that recall the geometric shapes, which definitely break with the rationalist tradition. It was made in Milan between 1960 and 1963 inspired by the "Sputnik" model of the Stilnovo Company, a 100% Italian product. Founded in Milan by Bruno Gatta in 1946, for decades Stilnovo is the most significant entity in the design of light fixtures. What characterizes Stilnovo, in the '50s and '60s, is the production and marketing of lamps with a particular cone shape. At the time designed by the Centro Stile Internovo, they became unique pieces. True symbols of the elegance of the '50s and '60s. In fact, they have left an indelible mark in the field of design and fashion. As the name already evokes, Sputnik, recalls the first artificial satellite that orbited the Earth on October 4, 1957, by the Russians. The peculiarity of its shape, a central sphere, and four long radio antennas, did not go unnoticed and became an inspiration for the world of design, and here is the creation of one of the most iconic pieces of furniture: the Sputnik style lamps. Between the '60s and '70s, several brands proposed brass wall lamps, ceiling lamps, and Sputnik chandeliers made in Italy, by the companies Stilnovo, Arteluce, and Sciolari paying homage to the satellite. Our wall lamp is characterized, as we said, by a "space" design”, typical of those fascinating times; with its basic and geometric style is a real piece of furniture that gives a unique atmosphere in the house. Made of brass with a black cone lamp holder, can be well contextualized in any room, giving that touch of originality and particularity that warms the environment. This vintage, the original wall sconce is a unique piece to be carefully displayed and told, it's not just a wall sconce, it's so much more. Its 60's design leaves room for freedom and innovation. The design explodes in a variety of styles and movements that explain its richness, make room for roundness, freedom of form and movement, lightness, and simplicity. Historical curiosity: with the launch of Sputnik 1 (PS1-prosteishy), the beginning of the space age was decreed, Sputnik means "satellite" (or "fellow traveler"), while prosteishy is a diminutive of prostoi, which means precisely "simple", "elementary", the satellite remained in orbit for 92 days, orbiting 1440 times equivalent to 60 million km. It disintegrated on January 4, 1958. The applique is in good condition, the brass parts show slight signs of time, but this guarantees its age and authenticity. The electrical system is new but the wiring is European, the compatibility of the voltage in other states must always be verified by an electrician before use.
