Stack is a cushion casually tossed on top of another cushion. The sofa is merely a magnification of this all-too-common scenery. In order to convert the soft features of a cushion, an object with a frameless structure, into a structured piece of furniture, hidden elements were added to join the stacked elements together, securing them in such away as to remain invisible. Though the placement of the cushions might appear random, it actually took careful consideration and numerous prototypes to determine the best configuration. The production was conducted with extra effort and care in order to lend the design an effortless and care-free look. Oki Sato was born in 1977 in Toronto, Canada. Received M.Arch. from Waseda University, Tokyo in 2002. Established design studio “Nendo” in the same year. Activity in the design world has not been limited to any one area but is rather multifarious, spanning from graphic and product design to designing furniture, installations, windows, and interiors, and even reaches into the realm of architecture. Chosen by Newsweek magazine as one of “The 100 Most Respected Japanese” and won many “Designer of the Year” of major awards include from Wallpaper* magazine and ELLE Decoration magazine. Nendo designs can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as Musee des Arts décoratifs and Centre Pompidou in Paris. About the Creator

Nendo

Born in Toronto, Oki Sato is Chief Designer of the multi-disciplinary design firm Nendo. Sato moved to Japan as a child, and earned his Masters in Architecture from Waseda University in 2002. While on a chance post-graduation visit to the Milan Furniture Fair, Sato was inspired by the freedom and energy surrounding design, and he cofounded Nendo later that same year.

Named for the Japanese word for “clay”, Nendo embraces its namesake's flexibility in both the types of projects it takes on as well as their execution, which ranges from handmade pieces to 3D-printed objects and environments. Nendo combines the minimalism and functional grace characteristic of traditional Japanese design with a lightheartedness and humor that reflects the country’s pop culture, as well as more western influences. The firm, which has offices in Tokyo, Milan, and Indonesia, is highly prolific, working on over 220 projects at any given time for a client list that include the likes of Issey Miyake, Cappellini, Lexus, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton. In 2012, the firm was named Designer of the Year by both Wallpaper* and Elle Décor magazines.
