Better Homes at Sculpture Center
Debates about the difference between art and design have grown tiresome, for sure, but intersections between the two disciplines, for me, remain exciting. Better Homes, a new exhibition currently on view at Long Island City’s Sculpture Center, presents a collection of artists whose work grapples with questions usually relegated to the domain of design – namely, how are personal and cultural identity and the concept of “home” expressed in domestic interiors?
The show’s super talented curator, Ruba Katrib, had the genius idea to invite my favorite design historian, Penny Sparke, to lecture tonight on the history of domesticity. Not only should you go see this exhibition, you should also read everything that Sparke has ever written (which is a lot). You won’t be sorry.
The exhibition runs through July 22nd.
